MEETING 17

27 MARCH 2007

In attendance: 24 members. Apologies: Paul Casson, whose brother-in-law’s misfortune made Ricky Gervais’ sensitive style of comedy all the more ironic when Paul attended his show instead of the Club…

Tonight we welcomed to the Club Jan’s lady wife and fellow modeller, Sonia. Whilst Sonia’s distinct lack of facial hair makes her a far more attractive addition to the Club than the rest of us pot-bellied has-beens, such skin-deep matters are of secondary importance to her stunning skill as a figure painter; welcome Sonia and your touch of feminine charm hasn’t been as well received since Dave last made the coffee in the shop when it was Val’s day off

Club Rules

The new Club Rules were ratified at the Bury meeting when it was realised that a quorum existed under the new constitution that allowed to do so. Job done then, thanks to Dave P for blagging the Running Club’s rules.

EAMS

It was suggested that the EAMS might suffer due to the change of date of the Brampton Show to the weekend before. It was decided that we should go ahead on the chosen day for the EAMS anyway as there was little likelihood that attendance would be greatly reduced.

EAMC

There was nothing further of note to add to the ongoing process of organising the EAMC.

Shows

Antwerp. Ray, Rob, Kelvin and Kev had attended the Antwerp show; well the first three attended the show, Kev was asleep in the hotel blissfully unaware of the tortured anguish that his colleagues were undergoing thinking that he’d fallen in the river or something, bless’em; at least he was until Jan ‘phoned the hotel from the wedding he was attending with Sonia to find out whether he needed to ring the police. Unfortunately, ‘never lose your wingman’ became ‘missing man’ as Kev decided that finishing his beer the morning before (and probably that of the rest of the pub) followed by an unguided tour of the stunning architecture of Antwerp in the dark was a seriously good idea instead of going to bed after having drunk the EU beer lake dry and having driven all day on 4 hours kip. As dawn broke and the realisation that drinking all of your money instead of keeping some for a taxi (the hotel was only 10 minutes walk from the pub – why would you need a taxi?) was a bad idea since the guided tour of the architecture had become a study in industrial estates and major arterial ring-roads really quite some distance from ‘home’. Never mind, advanced navigational skills returned with the dawn of marginal sobriety and with his back to the sun, the Secretary proceeded to march NW towards the river with the intention of following it northwards back into the City – good thinking, eh? Unfortunately, the map on the bus-stop wall indicated that he was somewhere near to the airport and that breakfast and the taxi to the show were really quite some time away under the current Billy Connolly comedic walk exercise regime that he was undertaking. In the end, the show had more traders than you shake a stick at, there were only 5 clubs displaying; however, the competition area was full of top-class workmanship and on the whole it was well worth the visit. It was agreed that on the pleasant trip home via the Dijkesmuide war memorial that some elements of the weekend were definitely worth repeating and that as many as possible should attend next year; if only to corral the Secretary next time.

“Tell the King to stop blubbing, Flash is not dead!” I’m here, just don’t breathalyse me please offisher.

Everything you ever needed to know about the quest for Flemish independence and how to blow away cobwebs can be found at Dijksmuide.

HINKLEY:

The Club has been allocated 12’ double-depth at the Hinckley show on Sunday 22 April 2007. Names to the Secretary asap please.

VISIT TO RAF MARHAM

The visit to RAF Marham has been arranged for Thursday 3 May 07; names to Dom at your convenience please with place and time of meeting TBD.

CLUB TALK – STAN HODGKINSON

The Bury club were keen to meet up with IPMS Ipswich to arrange a talk by the former Martin Baker test pilot and Lightning jockey, Stan Hodgkinson. Stan lives locally and has said that he would be delighted to chat to the clubs, probably at a venue in Stowmarket, at a date to be arranged. A positive response was indicated by Club members about room hire with the Bury club. Therefore, the Secretary undertook to contact the Bury treasurer in order to arrange a date for the talk.

AOB

There was no other business and the meeting adjourned to the bar.
