MEETING 9

 25 July 2006

Despite the soaring temperatures and the school holidays, we still mustered 18 ‘on parade’, with apologies from Robert.  A warm welcome was extended to Adrian who joins us from the West Sussex Branch whilst he is working in the area.  We adjourned to the ‘patio’ for the meeting as the temperature in the pool room was hot enough to melt lead!

EAMC

The repercussions of the event still rumble on, after last month’s increasingly drunken ramblings at the end of the meeting.  It was proposed that to really make our event more user-friendly and down-right different, we should extend the usage of the hall until the Saturday morning so that late-comers can view the participating models in the competition and then after lunch we convoy our visitors out to a suitably focussed venue for them to enjoy.  Initial investigations showed that accommodation could be had for only £15 at the motels around the A14 since they are usually empty on Friday evenings. There are many things to iron out in the proposal; however, the suggestion was met with far less derision than expected and unanimously approved!  It was accepted that the idea will be released at SMW 06 on the stand.  All there is to do now is to organise it!

SMW - THE THEME

A copy of the theme is attached at Annex A.  It was agreed to contact Andrew L to see if his kind offer still stands for loaning us one of his art classrooms during the holidays to enable the nascent SMW stand to be left in place whilst it is constructed.  It was generally agreed that the last week in August would probably be the most convenient for those who indicated that they could help in its construction.

BELTRING WAR & PEACE SHOW

A few of the members had attended the Beltring War & Peace show over the weekend of the 22-24 July.  A good time was had by all, despite the enormous amount of ‘numptiness’ exhibited by the strange re-enacting type fellows, a large number of whom appeared to venerate some bloke called Adolph Hitler.  Our very own Ian B was to be seen gracing a very poorly de-turfed trench, it has to be said, in the corner of a field that shall be forever Dien Bien Phu Ket.  It was interesting to note that it was the lady-friends of the Vietnam boys who appeared to have been forced to wear the black pyjamas and coolie hats of the V.C.  No offence Ian, but what was all that about?  Whilst the unusual antics of Dad’s T.A. were amusingly distracting, the real stars of the show were the innumerable vehicles on display.  Even the died-in-the-wool aeroplane modelling Secretary was to be seen clambering over a couple of vehicles his dad had worked on and taking photographs for a project somewhere down the line.  It was quite compelling to witness 60 tons of Challenger 1 ‘nerfing’ gently through the vast crowds.  Overall, it was agreed that it had been a successful weekend in that no-one had succumbed to buying a Ferret scout car or one of about 4000 Willy’s Jeeps and we even got away without buying enough ‘de-acc’ed’ Lee Enfields to supply the entire cast of the Longest Day!  (Well, Kev couldn’t have bought anything since he’d lost his wallet and Dom was probably still asleep in a bar somewhere!)

AOB

SBX Models.   SBX Models has finally taken the plunge into full custody of the shop.  It was not Dave’s idea, honest…Val and Wendy have made him do it!  The shop will re-open almost a year to the day and it will feature a ‘proper-coffee’ machine, mmmmm!  Next meeting: 09:31, 1 Aug 06, Dave’s shop.

Battlefront, Barnham Camp.      There will be a military vehicle show at Barnham Camp on the weekend of 12-13 Aug 06.  Any takers, talk to Dom or Bob J.

Wordsearch.    Steve B has kindly donated a wordsearch puzzle for those long rain-sodden days at the beach that will inevitably happen after this long spell of good weather whilst we’ve all been working.  The puzzle is at Annex B to these minutes.
