Club Meeting 28th February 2006
(Kev Baxter - Secretary)

It might be time to searching for a new venue!  This meeting saw 17 members attend, 2 new members and 2 visitors from Colchester once again.  If we keep growing at this rate we’re going to be out of the door – again.  A warm and hearty welcome to Brian and Chris: the former an astute aeroplane modeller who spotted almost immediately that apart from what was on the table, we were a club who left modelling pretty much in the ‘shed’ and just got together every month to drink beer and the latter a new friend for the beleaguered Paul in that he models the targetry requirements of the World’s air forces – no bad thing then.  We hope for a long and happy friendship together.  Andy and John were welcomed again from Colchester as it seems the bar was closed down there…

 EAST ANGLIAN MODEL SHOW (EAMS)

After a ‘subby’ up at Bury, Dom was pleased to announce that the EAMS will be run on a budget this year to ensure that the necessary resources can be put into the advertising of the show.  £100 from each club was the agreed sum, thus ensuring that our Club was not excessively stretched financially.  Ray inquired as to the sharing of any profit from the show; however, since EAMS is not conducted as a profit making exercise it was decided that after the customary donation to the EA Air Ambulance, any profit would be held in abeyance for the benefit of next year’s show.

Further to the promotion of the Show, the Secretary proposed the idea gained from a chat in the bar with Bob at the Milton Keynes show, that we, as a club, could host our own small-scale show at Ransomes’.  Entitled the East Anglian Model Competition, the format would be that we host an invitational competition of all of the model clubs from the region, perhaps on one evening in June and offer a ‘pie and pea’ type supper as part of the proceedings.  From this event we can then generate magazine and newspaper copy publicity to herald the EAMS.  Neil Robinson from Model Aircraft Monthly has indicated already that he would be pleased to attend and give us coverage in his magazine.  There was no dissent, therefore the Secretary undertook to approach Ransomes’ for a calendar date and to contact the adjacent clubs and invite them to the Competition.

 MODEL OF THE YEAR

Steve has done some sterling work on the Club Competition front.  Introduced this meeting were voting slips for the cumulative Model of the Year.  Good luck everyone, or should that be well done George!  A copy of the rules is at Annex A.

 BELTRING

Dom requested names for the Beltring Show in July.  Accommodation will cost £37.50 for the Maidstone Travel Inn on the Friday night.  The Show promises to be quite an event because of or despite the fact, depending on your point of view, it will be full of ‘saddos’ dressed as Waffen SS and Glenn Miller.  No offence!

 NATIONALS

Accommodation has been booked for the Nationals.  Should anyone who is not booked in to the International Hotel, Telford (£120 for the 3 day weekend – based on 2 sharing) and still would like to be, please get in touch with the Secretary soonest.

Speaking of which, the National’s theme was tip-toed around again.  Ray had suggested, “Twin, Triplets and Quads”; a good choice, but the Sec – knowing how difficult it can be to persuade people to divert from their chosen path, looked at what models were already available and the fact that we can turn last year’s stand around and came up with, “River Deep, Mountain High”.  Tenuous links aplenty there.  Comments please and a decision next month?

 TUDDENHAM 6 HOUR BUILD

Dave P has forwarded a proposal that we engage in a ‘6 Hour Build’ at the Tuddenham Village Hall.  The idea is that we select an aeroplane or a tank to build within 6 hours.  The models are then judged on their merits, displayed proudly or slung in the scrap box depending on your disposition and then we all pile into the pub for tea and medals.  A general affirmation of the plan was drawn from the crowd and the banter then started…

Date and time TBD.

SUBBY

Again Dave P suggested that we swell his Village’s GNP in that we have a subby at the newly restored pub, The Fountain in Tuddenham.  “Hoorah”, came the reply and the Chairman then suggested that we wreck the place to give them something to do after we had left.  Oh dear!  Again time TBD.

FURTHERANCE OF THE CLUB’S PROFILE

Other than trashing newly refurbished pubs, Stu C asked if we were likely to be attending any other events that might further the Club’s profile.  We are already invited to the Lavenham (Disused) Open Day on 1 Jul 06 and Boxted will probably be another ‘goer’ again this year with other venues being sought to publicise our efforts.  It was suggested that with most of the immediately forthcoming shows already booked up, the invitation to a show of our own might prompt more responses from Clubs who are not as far down the path of planning their own shows, as say, Southern Expo or Peterborough.  The Secretary undertook to liaise with some of the more adjacent clubs to promote our cause.

The Secretary further inquired as to whether the Club would like to have guest speakers or further visits arranged.  “Yes”, was the reply from you all.  Okay then, we’ll see what can be arranged!

NEXT MEETING

The next meeting will be held on Tuesday, 28 Mar 06.

THE TABLE

Those that had brought models then gave a little summary of each. Photos can be seen here.
